Home Fire Safety - Tips

  • Do not give fire a place to start in your home.
  • Establish and draw a fire escape plan. This is best posted in an obvious place, ie the fridge for everyone to visualise and memorise.
  • Establish two escape routes from each room of the home if possible.
  • Mark designated escape windows for infants and the elderly.
  • Establish regular fire drills. The more you rehearse, the less panic stricken a child maybe.
  • Establish a designated safe meeting place, outside your home.
  • Establish a simple fire alarm signal, to be used by your family.
  • Install a smoke alarm to provide early warning of fire and smoke. [Regulation in NSW]. Test on a regular basis, ie 3 months and replace the batteries, once a year.
  • Close all bedroom and hall doors during sleeping hours.
  • Make sure all escape windows and doors open easily and are regularly checked.
  • Place a rope or ladder in a convenient location to allow escape from the second floor.
  • In case of fire do not waste time getting possessions and valuables. Just get out of the home!
  • Call 000 from a safe location.
  • Instruct children how to test doors for heat and smoke before opening.
  • Make sure the keys to locked doors are easily & readily accessible.
  • Carefully open doors during the fire and be in a position to close them immediately.
  • Crouch close to the floor to avoid the deadly gasses and heat, that rise.
  • Above all - Stay Calm & Don't Panic!
